A Animatrix occurs as collection of nine CG and anime short films set in the world of The Matrix, partly written per Wachowski brothers. Apiece short is directed by the different acclaimed anime director. It includes "The Second Renaissance" (the prequel to The Matrix), "Final Flight of the Osiris" (which sets the scene for two The Matrix Reloaded and Enter the Matrix), and a back story on The Child ("Kid's Story") as well as 5 other shorts that reveal other mysteries of the Matrix world. A Animatrix likewise features voice actors world health organization provided a voices for the English version of Square Enix's Final Fantasy X, who come Matt McKenzie, James Arnold Taylor, John DiMaggio, Tara Strong and Hedy Burress. A English version too features a voices of Victor Williams (TV's The King of Queens), Melinda Clarke (TV's The O.C.), and the voices of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

A Animatrix was freed in DVD by Warner Bros. on June 3, 2003. It was broadcast in Cartoon Network's Adult Swim on April 17, 2004 and has received airplay on Teletoon several months after.
